How to respond and react to a flood

 

Every part of the country has its positives and negatives in regards to weather. In the Northwest, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better area for dry warmth in the summertime, as conditions tend to be much more comfortable than the oppressively humid Southeast. At the same time, though, cloudy skies are fairly frequent in contrast to the Sunshine State of Florida.

But there's one weather-related reality that every part of the country shares in common: flooding. Floods are an equal-opportunity offender, capable of causing substantial levels of damage as a risk factor of virtually every kind of storm, including tornadoes, hurricanes, snow events and torrential downpours.

Flood insurance provides homeowners with the funding they need to pay for repairs should they be affected, yet only 12 percent of Americans are covered, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

You can't prevent a flood from happening, but there are steps you can take that may suppress the effects. Here are a few tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to take before, during and in the aftermath.

Before

  • Monitor news reports forecasting the potential for flooding.
  • Understand the differences between a flood warning and a flood watch. The former means flooding is very likely, while the latter means there is an elevated risk, but the event is not necessarily imminent.
  • Assemble an emergency kit, which should have enough necessities to satisfy however many people are in the house for 72 hours. Ideal inclusions are water, non-perishable foods, toiletries, a first-aid kit, and flashlights with extra batteries.

During

  • Follow the instructions of safety officials regarding when - or if - it's necessary to evacuate.
  • If you haven't already moved low-lying possessions to higher ground, do so. The basement is the most likely part of the house to be affected. Bulky appliances may be best situated on cinder blocks or anything that gets them off the ground.
  • Avoid treading through standing water, which poses a tripping hazard and could also be contaminated

After

  • Return home only when you're given the all clear.
  • Stay away from all wires that may have been exposed to water.
  • Examine the house and contact your insurer if there's damage.
