Life is unpredictable. Life insurance shouldn’t be.

What are the types of life insurance?

Policies come in many forms. But the most common types of life insurance are term life insurance and whole life insurance. Considering your age, health and other factors, your MMA agent will help you decide which type of policy and coverage amounts will work best for you.

Term life insurance

Term life insurance pays the person or people you designate – your partner or spouse, children or others – a fixed amount of money if you die during the term. Life insurance terms are often 10, 15, 20 or 30 years.

Whole life insurance

Whole life insurance, sometimes called permanent life insurance, continues until you die or stop making payments. In addition to paying your beneficiaries when you die, whole life insurance has “cash value.” The more you invest in your policy, the more money you have to access or borrow against.

How much does life insurance cost?

The cost will depend on which type of policy you choose and other factors. Your agent will guide you through your options, accounting for factors such as:
  • Your age. Life insurance is generally less expensive for younger people.
  • Your gender.
  • Where you live.
  • Your health habits and family medical history.
  • Your occupation.

How much life insurance do you need?

Many people use this rule of thumb: Your life insurance policy should pay out 10 to 12 times your annual salary. Others start by subtracting their family’s financial obligations (expenses and debt) from the resources (income and liquid assets) they’d have after you died; the difference is how much coverage they’d need. The best guidance: Your needs are individual. Your agent will help you create a plan based on your circumstances.
