Operating since 1972, PayneWest Insurance had grown to be among one of the leading insurance agencies in the Northwest. Our staff of professionals assist our clients in meeting their objectives through solution-focused planning and day-to-day support aimed at reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and improving employee satisfaction.


In April 2021, PayneWest Insurance partnered with Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA), one of the largest brokerage operations in North America, becoming MMA’s Northwest Region.

With over 10,000 colleagues and 170 offices across the US and Canada, MMA is one of the largest insurance brokerages in the US, leveraging size, scope, and vendor relationships, while providing access to local service, regional expertise, and global resources.

We combine the personalized service model of a local consultant with the global resources and expertise of our parent company, Marsh McLennan (NYSE: MMC). MMC is the world’s leading insurance broker and risk adviser with over 85,000 employees and provides advice and capabilities to clients in over 130 countries. Our History

Marsh McLennan Agency, formerly Paynewest Insurance, is centered on what is best for its Clients, Colleagues and Communities, or “3Cs.” 

That vision is a realization of PayneWest's original founder, Terry Payne. Terry entered the insurance industry in 1961 while attending college at the University of Montana. After a decade working for a local independent agency, Terry started Terry Payne & Co., Inc. on January 1, 1972 and still operates that company today. Throughout the 1990's, Terry separately purchased Hoiness LaBar Insurance and Montana International Insurance, forming Payne Financial Group, Inc. (PFG). In November of 2012, under Terry’s leadership, PFG acquired Western States Insurance, creating PayneWest Insurance which at the time was the largest acquisition completed by a privately-owned independent agency. In 2021, MMA joined Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC to operate as MMA’s Northwest regional hub.

Terry loves the business of business, as well as golf, spending time on Flathead Lake, and movies. Terry, and his wife Patt, have two sons, Tim and Steve.
