My family and I live in Spokane, Washington. I grew up mostly on the East Coast. I was born in New York City but moved around a bunch as a kid, spending time in New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. I went to college down in Virginia before heading to New York City to really kick off my career.
I did all the normal stuff that a kid does to make a little money when I was younger. Mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, etc. But I also had some really odd jobs early on. I worked at the public library for a little bit. It was a brutally boring job but they were so desperate for help they actually paid pretty well! I was a busboy throughout high school. I even took a job delivering telephone books one summer!
Wild and a little crazy!
I met my wife Katy in New York City. She is a Montana native who grew up in Helena. We have been married for 13 years. Katy is nothing short of amazing!
We have four kids: Chloe (10), Brody (9), Luke (6) and Lucy (5). Our house is very active! It is always filled with a lot of laughter… and the occasional yelling from Dad when we are trying to get out the door and somewhere on time!
When it comes to problem solving or leading a team, to always keep my focus on getting it right vs needing to be right.
Driving my kids to and from soccer fields and/or our elementary school gym throughout the week has become my most active hobby of late.
Moving to the Pacific Northwest has really shaped many of my current hobbies. Most activities revolve around being outdoors. I’m a very average skier but I really enjoy the mountains. As a family, we try to take full advantage of the nearby lakes. Thanks to Colt Palmer, I’m now a much improved pontoon captain. I also have grown to really enjoy trail running.
I listen to all types of music and a variety of different bands. It's hard to pin down a favorite. Zach Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bob Marley seem to make it on my short list these days.
While it has grown increasingly harder and harder to admit, I am a New York Giants fan. However, I do also root for the Seahawks these days. When I was a kid growing up back East, we would sit in the bleachers at the old Yankee Stadium for about $10. Those prices are long gone but I still have great memories of the ballpark and cheering on the New York Yankees.
Having lived in Spokane for 9 years now, I've been converted to a Zag fan, too!
It might sound strange, but leaving an established and successful career in New York City to take the road less traveled and join PayneWest Insurance - now MMA Northwest - is something I’m really proud of. At the time, it felt like a huge risk, but looking back today, it was the best decision I ever made in my career and the story is still being written. It all started with a chance introduction to Terry Payne, who helped me to visualize what a new and exciting opportunity could look like at PayneWest nearly a decade ago. And still today, I get to be part of an amazing company that is achieving newfound successes every day. I get to work with awesome people that I respect and a team with unlimited potential.
I love to travel. There are so many places I would love to visit and experience. South Africa is probably at the top of my list right now!
There is no shortcut to success. Hard work and a genuine curiosity for the business that we are in can take you pretty far.. Specific to our industry, I often tell younger people not to worry about what others think. The insurance industry can sometimes get a bad rap. But in reality, when it comes to an exciting and rewarding career, it’s one of the best kept secrets! A career in insurance can actually be a little overwhelming for someone new to it. It offers so many different career tracks. Make it your own and try not to unnecessarily disrupt the amazing compounding effect hard work can have on your career and the opportunities that await you.
